Giovanni Sollima

Giovanni Sollima

A world-famous cellist, he collaborated, among others, with Claudio Abbado, Martha Argerich, Jorg Demus and Giuseppe Sinopoli.

In parallel to his activity as a soloist, his creative curiosity drives him to explore new frontiers in the field of Composition, through contaminations between different genres: rock, jazz, electronic, Anglo-Saxon minimalism and ethnic music from all over the Mediterranean area, based on a deep classical background, are the formula of Sollima’s unmistakable style.

In 2013 and 2014 he is the artistic director and master concertator of the Salento festival Notte della Taranta. Also in 2013 he inaugurated the May Day Concert in Piazza San Giovanni in Rome (an event he had already participated in in 2007) leading the formidable ensemble of 100 Cellos, which he founded the year before at the Teatro Valle occupied together with his friend Enrico Melozzi.

The City of Milan commissioned him to create the official sound logo for Expo 2015. On June 2, 2017, for the Festa della Repubblica, he performed live on Rai 1 a concert at the Quirinale in front of the Presidents of the Republic, the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate, and the ambassadors of all the countries of the world. In the same year he also played at the Ministry of Education in front of thousands of young people from all over Italy and at the Senate of the Republic for the traditional Christmas Concert, again live on Rai 1. He is currently composing music for a melologue with Antonio Albanese on a text by Michele Serra, commissioned by the Teatro alla Scala.
